Lighthouse Keeper Membership Deed. Get a Small Piece of a Real Working New England Lighthouse!
March 2011 Update:
We will be offering another Lighthouse Keeper Membership Deed to a real working New England Lighthouse. We will update & replace this page once details are finalized.
We seek local orgs, kids ocean-education, all ocean-marine life groups and local businesses for our triple bottom line, caused-based approach. Your members buy a lighthouse keeper membership deed, we give your group cash – 10-20% of each membership sale. Businesses — we want to help spreading the locavore – we send members to your business and you give 5%-15% discount for members. Send us your name and info. thx Bob
This is our old and dated history below.
We Still Keep The Beacon Burning? The Bidding War Has Ended. Who is the mysterious “redtide,” will he/she work with us; what is the fate of the lighthouse? Redtide won with a final bid on Tuesday, September 14, of a whopping $190,000. But the game isn’t over yet as our community leader, Bob, tries to connect. Can we collaborate? For more details go to our blog: http://www.ramislandlighthouse.com/blog/
Keep supporting us during this transition period as we sort out the future of the lighthouse. Please continue to donate. If we succeed in collaborating with redtide, your donation converts to the Light Keeper Membership Deed and you are on your way to owning a real Maine working lighthouse. It’s still possible for a “people’s option” vs. a pure private lockout. And ownership would stay in Maine too!
For just a few dollars each we can band together so you, as a community member, can:
- Own a slice of working maritime history – Ram Island Ledge Lighthouse (circa 1905)
- Assist in running the lighthouse – everyone can vote
- Visit anytime – in person and on the web with live feeds
- Build an active community – Keeper Membership Deed
How awesome and cool is that! – Do it now or the opportunity could be lost forever!

Ram Island Ledge Lighthouse has stood at the entrance to Portland harbor for 105 years, lighting the way for thousands of boats that have sailed past its rocky ledges from the open ocean and into safe port. Without its light and friendly fog horn, many boats would crash into those ledges, which just barely disappear at high tide and leave behind the illusion of deep water. A mile offshore from Portland Headlight in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, it is easily visible from many points along the coast, often photographed, easy to reach by boat, and is a popular scheduled stop on tours of Casco Bay.

After all these years of protecting ocean travelers, the lighthouse needs our help. And fast: it was up for private sale through auction by the US Government. Redtide won. But we still have have hopes to collaborate with redtide on our unique opportunity to operate this maritime icon as a community, using an innovative historic preservation social network model where everyone is a Keeper-steward.
Imagine being part-owner in a real, working lighthouse on the coast of Maine! It’s still possible. Every person who donates $49 becomes a founding charter member, gets a “home” mini block, owns the coordinates and has a voice and a vote to assist in preserving the lighthouse. You get a chance to shape the way it is cared for in the future. This model empowers you to make a difference and “Own the Good You Do” by owning the history you preserve.
Experiential Preservation
When you become an owner-keeper of Ram Island Ledge Lighthouse, you have the chance to create and be THE community for which there are no limits. Maybe you will help design a logo and name for Ram Island Ledge Lighthouse beer. Maybe you will set up the Ram Island Ledge Lighthouse Film Festival, or maybe you’ll be the person who wins Best Film and gets to be the Guest Keeper in the lighthouse for a week as the prize. Maybe you will monitor sensors for recording wave pressure, water temperature, weather and the sound of the fog horn and then send your findings around the world via Twitter. Maybe you will facilitate an online discussion group called “Birds of Casco Bay.” Maybe you’d like to paddle a kayak out to the lighthouse and take pride in knowing that your efforts helped preserve it for everyone to enjoy.
Do It Now
What you do as an individual matters – you have to decide to act now and give us the power to negotiate and work with redtide to maintain the Ram Island Ledge for years to come. Only you can help us reach a large community of 10,000 members. Show you care, and feel cool about it too. It will be yours. (Product Details).
Buy a membership deed, get your entire extended family to purchase a “family estate” block (9 mini blocks), watch as these new events unfold… send a link to your friends.
Thanks,
The RiLL Team
